She was conscious of a ceaseless undercurrent of sound—the guttural Chinese tongue. Miraculously, her schoolmates were so upswept in their own summer planning that they had no time to interrogate her. Against the walls hung an assortment of staves, brown-bills, (weapons then borne by the watch,) muskets, handcuffs, great-coats, and lanterns. They did not want her. Just a friendly polite suggestion. She fought him with tooth and nail. All sorts of battered tramps, junks and riff-raff of the seas trailed in and out. She had, poor inexperienced fool, given herself away. All these wonderful comrades, henceforth and for ever hers.
